For Immediate ReleaseBoard of Directors Acts to Ensure Long Term Viability of the Performing Arts in Richmond
The Board of Directors of the Virginia Performing Arts Foundation announced today a series of steps to help promote the performing arts organizations and the diverse audiences that will benefit from their project. In particular, the Foundation will:
· Focus short-term attention on fundraising to renovate the Carpenter Center as soon as possible without relying on City funds
· Retain title for the entire Thalhimer’s block
· Reduce costs and overhead to the lowest practical amount while preserving the core of the Foundation’s mission
· Develop creative and alternative ways to reach the Foundation’s longer term goals, which include: completion of a multi-purpose music hall and other venues for smaller community performing arts organizations; enhance arts education for children throughout the region; and engage our diverse communities in dialogue on the value of performing arts to our overall quality of life. The Board also released the following statement:
“After months of discussion with the City Administration, we are deeply disappointed that we couldn’t find common ground to move forward together on a common vision for the project. To preserve the health of the downtown performing arts organizations and serve the needs of the diverse audiences that will benefit from the project, we must take control of our destiny and eliminate as many of the uncertainties as possible.
This needs to be about serving the people and not about personalities. While we continue to maintain that we are legally entitled to funds lawfully appropriated by City Council, we must move forward without relying on City funds that are being withheld. We also appreciate the overwhelming support from many members of City Council, performing arts organizations, and citizens of the region who continue to want a thriving performing arts community.”
