The Times-Dispatch Op Ed Page: Let the Shrieking Begin!

“Bush: ‘Entire Economy’ Is in Danger,” the front page headline informs us.

And on that note, isn’t it about time for one of those compelling Richmond Times-Dispatch editorial page diatribes on how great the U.S. Economy is faring under the Bush/Cheney administration?

Some previously-published words of RTD wisdom (Caution: Do not handle hot beverages while reading the following):

“For those of you worried about the health of the American economy, it’s officially time to relax.”

“An economic boon has already bloomed and it seems likely to last a good, long time.”

“It’s time for my quarterly column on why the U.S. Economy isn’t nearly as bad as some would have you believe.”

“It’s probably worth taking a couple of paragraphs to note that there’s not a shred of evidence to suggest the United States is in a recession right now.”

“Democrats trotted out all kinds of gloomy stories about the economy to bolster their case against President Bush. No real problem there. That’s the job of opposition parties after all. And I don’t really blame them - they’re politicians - for exaggerating their economic statistic.”

“The viable Republican contenders for president offer policies that are far more mature, pragmatic, and likely to succeed than do the leading Democratic candidates - who for the first time in at least a generation are openly campaigning on a platform of higher taxes, more regulation, and expanding protectionism.”

“The bombast has begun. Already, some pundits and politicians are trotting out comparisons to Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression. Yawn. How terribly predictable. Every time the U.S. economy faces a few challenges, the shrieking is unleashed.”

Cue the shrieking…
